Lately, I have really enjoyed watching nature shows. There is so much beauty and creativity in Creation that we really don’t even fully grasp. Scientists are still discovering new things and still have many unanswered questions about life on our planet. It’s just another opportunity for me to marvel at how incredible God is. The scripture that often comes to mind when I am admiring His Creation is Matthew 6:26-29:
26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
God did all of these amazing things for animals that have no spirit. How many more amazing things does He do for us? He brought life to all the land and sea animals in two days, and thousands of years later, His commands are still being executed. And many of them we have not yet discovered. It’s another reminder that His thoughts are not our thoughts!
I’m going to share some of the amazing things that were on the last show I watched. In one instance, scientists were baffled by this circular artwork on the bottom of the ocean that looked like a sun. It took them 16 years to discover that this nearly 6 foot design is made by a single male pufferfish to attract a mate and protect the eggs. It takes him over a week of constant work to make this nest. Only God could orchestrate something so necessary and beautiful at the same time.
There was another segment on the olive sea turtles of Costa Rica. When it’s nesting time around 500,000 female turtles simultaneously arrive on a particular beach to lay about 100 eggs each. They call this “predator swamping” because even though there are numerous birds and other creatures waiting for the freshly laid eggs and baby turtles heading to sea that come later, there is no way they can eat all 50,000,000 turtles. Only God could orchestrate all of these turtles arriving at the exact moment necessary.
The last one that fascinated me is a sea creature called the chambered nautilus. They move by regulating the gas (lighter) and water (heavier) levels found in their 30 or so chambers. This allows them to ascend or descend in the water. They can also propel themselves by pushing water out of their chambers. Most remarkably, they can descend to depths of 2,000 feet and somehow withstand the pressure. At 2,000 feet there is approximately 1,500 pounds of pressure per square foot. Humans can only go to depths of around 130 feet before they need special equipment. Military submarines can go down to around 1,000 feet. Why did God make an 8” creature so talented? It’s just another opportunity for us to marvel at His grandeur.
Final Thoughts…
The next time you wonder if God will answer your prayers or if He will come through on His promises, find a good nature show to watch. His wisdom, creativity and love are oozing out of every corner of our universe. If He can take care of all of that, don’t we think He can take care of us?
