When we think about butterflies, at least for me, the scripture that always comes to mind is Romans 12:2:
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
The word transformed is the Greek word metamorphoo which is where we get our word metamorphosis. This is exactly how we describe the change a butterfly undergoes. On the last blog, we started to associate a chrysalis with our secret place. Is it possible that every time we enter our spiritual secret place, we come out transformed? I’m starting to think there is so much unrealized potential in our secret places. If our heart is set on intimacy with our Father, we are willing to completely shut off our flesh and we have the courage to wait on God, things will change, and only for the better. The word renewing in the Greek actually means a renovation or a complete change for the better.
I want to continue with the scripture we started looking at on the last blog. Let’s look at a portion of Psalm 27:5-6:
5 …In the secret place of His tabernacle
He shall hide me;
He shall set me high upon a rock.6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me…
To summarize, after we go into the secret of His tabernacle, then our heads are lifted above our enemies. It’s not because we said the right prayer or did the right 5-step checklist. It’s because we surrendered to God and put our complete faith in Him. In the secret place we take our mind off of the cares of the world. We cast our burdens at the foot of the cross. We let God take us up to His rock and we watch our enemies lose their position of authority. Metamorphosis occurs, in us and in the situations around us.
Final Thoughts…
While I have not yet observed it, I have a vision of what it looks like for the butterfly to come out of it’s chrysalis. A monarch chrysalis is about 1 inch long. Not long after the butterfly comes out it is at least twice that length. There is a breakthrough that must happen in order for something the size of a butterfly to come out of the chrysalis. And when it comes out of its chrysalis it is transformed. Are we finding that our time in the secret place leaves us transformed? If not, perhaps we haven’t yet found the true secret place that God is beckoning us to. Join me on the mission to find our own chrysalis secret place that completely changes us for the better every time we enter it!
