1 Samuel 26:24:
24 And indeed, as your life was valued much this day in my eyes, so let my life be valued much in the eyes of the Lord, and let Him deliver me out of all tribulation.
These are the words of David after he spared Saul’s life for the second time. He could have easily gotten rid of his biggest enemy. All the running from cave to cave could have ended right then and there. There are few people today that would have refrained in that moment. But he stood by his convictions. He was not going to take the life of the Lord’s anointed. Even though Saul grieved the Lord and had his kingdom taken away as a result, this didn’t change the fact that the Lord had anointed him.
Are we able to see people in our lives the way David saw Saul? Instead of seeing the oozing unrighteousness on those around us can we still see that they were created in the image of God? Do we feel God’s sorrow over a misguided life that was penned for a purpose? Does our heart ache with a longing that they would come into the destiny that God is patiently waiting to breathe into them?
I love how David understood that the way to living a life that is valued in the eyes of the Lord requires that we value what He values. If we are stuck on satisfying ourselves, getting revenge on those that hurt us and climbing to the top of the ladder of the day, we are not valuing what God values. And isn’t it interesting that David wasn’t just asking for his life to be valued, but that God would deliver him out of all tribulation or trouble? Honoring what God honors is more than just a checklist item; it’s the key to a victorious life that heaps up indestructible treasure.
Final Thoughts…
It’s scriptures like this where we see just how humble David was. Now I know he wasn’t perfect, but you don’t get called “a man after God’s own heart” for no good reason. Because David had a heart like God’s he also had eyes to see like God saw. Lord, lead me to this place of humility so that I can have eyes and a heart like Yours. I want to see people and situations with the same grace and love as You do. I want to grow in my capacity to love even when it’s not easy.
