United We Stand

The powers of darkness are no match for our frail human frames and souls. Our enemies have had thousands of years to refine their steal, kill, and destroy tactics. The only things that give us victory are the blood of Jesus and the love of our Heavenly Father.

Whether we like it or not, the day we commit our lives to Jesus we enter a spiritual battle between light and dark, good and evil. As we go deeper and deeper with God, this battle only intensifies. But with increased intensity comes a greater understanding of the impenetrable tools God gives to those who seek Him.

One of the greatest kings of Judah was a man named Jehoshaphat. While he certainly wasn’t perfect (none of us are), the Bible says he walked in the ways of his father David and sought and followed God and His commandments. 2 Chronicles 20 recounts the incredible story of how Jehoshaphat overcame the people of Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir. I’m going to pull out a few verses from this chapter:

Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, and said: “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You? …

‘If disaster comes upon us—sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.’ 10 And now, here are the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir… rewarding us by coming to throw us out of Your possession which You have given us to inherit. 12 O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”…

14 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel…15 And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s…

17 You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.”…

20 So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.”…

22 Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.

One thing I find interesting in this story is that Jehoshaphat’s prayers and call to worship were not done in a vacuum. He did these things in the company of other believers. They were united in their desire to overcome their enemies and walk in the victory that God had in store for them. Corporate prayer and worship were their impenetrable weapons.

Final Thoughts…

As I mentioned in the last blog, one of the most freeing things in our trials is recognizing who are enemy is. We do not wrestle with flesh and blood (others or our own). We do not wrestle the weather, our bank account, our sins, our past or our future. Our battle is with Satan. The only reason we have victory is because of the cross. Our only reasons for hope are God’s goodness and His love for us. When we are in community with people who are willing to stand and battle like Jehoshaphat there is no power of darkness that will prevail against us.
