Manasseh vs. Josiah

Tuesday, September 30th, 2025

On more than one occasion, when some major event happens in the world or my personal life, the scriptures I was already reading become vitally important in understanding the times. It’s like God starts to prepare me for what is coming and what my role will be in it.

When Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10th, 2025, I was reading the end of 2 Kings, specifically the contrasting reigns of Manasseh and Josiah. In 2 Kings 21 we see a recounting of the 55 evil years of Manasseh’s reign. Some of his sins include building altars for other gods, sacrificing his son, and putting an image of Asherah in God’s temple. Verse 9 says he committed more evil than even the other nations that the Lord had delivered the Israelites from. This dude was bad.

It’s no secret that our nation (under the leadership of numerous poor administrations) has welcomed a rampant amount of sin into a country that was founded on the backs of God-fearing and God-worshiping men. The things that we see on the news are becoming more and more grievous. And this is what we hear about. I am sure there is even greater darkness in the things that we are not privy to. Satan has been busy getting many recruits to do his dirty work. But thankfully a remnant remains.

In 2 Kings 22 we see the incredible redemptive story of Josiah. He was only eight when he started to reign, but verse 2 says he did not turn to the right or to the left from the ways of his father David. He went on a cleansing spree. He took down high places and altars, removed all the altars and idols from God’s temple, removed all the idolatrous priests and commanded the people to once again keep the Passover. What Josiah did seems to me like what Charlie Kirk was doing. He took the time to learn the Book of the Law, went through the land telling others what it said and helped them to follow the path of truth and righteousness.

Final Thoughts…

I have just a few more hidden treasures that really make this story come alive. The name Manasseh in the original Hebrew means “one who forgets”. Isn’t it true that our nation has forgotten God and the promises and blessings He has for us? The name Josiah means “whom Jehovah heals”. I just see this deep healing that Charlie Kirk started in our nation (and even the world). The reach of that healing seems to be spreading farther and having more power even in his death. When Josiah was 39 years old, he was killed in battle at a place called Megiddo. That word means “place of crowds”. Isn’t it interesting that Charlie was killed in front of one of the many crowds that he was able to attract because of his stand for truth and righteousness? This is just one of the many times where I say, “Wow, God. You are not surprised by anything, and You are going to use all of this to do some incredible things in our world, our nation, our churches and our hearts!”
