We all know that God’s rock is a solid foundation that we are to build our lives upon. Today I want to look at some of the scriptures that discuss what comes out of the rock and why these things are significant.
In Exodus 17:6 and Numbers 20:8 we see two instances where the Israelites complained about their lack of water in the wilderness. God used Moses to perform the miracles of making water come out of a rock. Water is life. Without miraculous provision humans cannot go more than three days without water. God wanted the Israelites to see His ability to provide for them no matter where they were or what they needed. Water coming from a rock is not natural. God is making the impossible possible.
Psalm 81:16 and Deuteronomy 32:13 talk about honey coming from the rock. I love this image of something sweet and satisfying coming from something hard and lifeless. It’s a beautiful picture of what God does to us. If we allow Him, He takes our hard hearts and sweetens them up. He takes our lifeless bodies and breathes purpose and provision into them.
The last element that I want to talk about is oil. Job 29:6 and Deuteronomy 32:13 both talk about oil coming from the rock. Oil in the Bible symbolizes healing, anointing and the Holy Spirit. Those are things we need on a daily basis.
Final Thoughts…
Each one of these items is significant on their own, but when we look at them all together they make an incredible masterpiece of how much God loves us. I have a vision of a painting with a rock in the middle and the picture divided into thirds with each one of these elements coming out of the rock and smaller images of what these things symbolize. Maybe someone talented can paint that for me someday! God not only created us but He daily gives us life, goodness and all the benefits that the Holy Spirit provides. He isn’t just looking for us to complete a checklist. He wants to lavish love on us and show us how able He is to make the impossible possible. What do you need from the Rock today?
