A Thundering Secret

Thursday, August 28th, 2025

Today I am continuing on in my quest to discover more about the secret place. The last few weeks, on our sabbath day, I have discovered that the trampoline has become a temporary secret place. Once the snow flakes start falling I will have to find a new spot but for now it works. With instrumental worship music, a Bible and a note taking device the prayers, songs and tears start to flow. God is so faithful. Once I make the effort to go there He meets me with His presence, wisdom, revelation and love. Some of these things even become blog topics.

This past week, He prompted me to read Psalm 81. Verse 7a says this:

You called in trouble, and I delivered you;
I answered you in the secret place of thunder;

That phrase secret place of thunder grabbed my attention. The word secret in the original Hebrew language is the same word that’s in Psalm 139:15 “when I was made in secret” and Psalm 27:5 “In the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me”. There is a whole lot going on in that secret place! People are being formed, thunder is booming, and God is protecting His sons and daughters.

The secret place of thunder seems almost like an oxymoron. If you were to tell someone a secret and you yelled it as loud as thunder it would not be a secret anymore. But in this scripture, the thunder isn’t heard until we enter the secret place. This is where the wisdom and love of God become as loud as thunder. This thunder is such that the world cannot hear. It’s a kind of thunder that is hidden from those who aren’t willing to lay aside the time and devotion necessary to enter the secret place.

Psalm 73:17 says it this way:

17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God;
Then I understood their end.

The sanctuary of God here is the secret place. All those unanswered questions, all those unmet provisions, all those fears and wounds meet Jehovah Rapha when we go into the secret place. These things lose their pull on us when we are fully enveloped in the presence of God. Even if He doesn’t specifically answer all of those things at the same time, our encountering the full character of God reminds us that He knows the way, He has prepared the way and whenever it happens it will be nothing less than beautiful.

Final Thoughts…

I pray that every time we enter the secret place we would feel and hear and thunder of God. That our reverence of Him would wash away every lesser thing that is trying to grab our love and attention. That we would see He is a God not just to pray to once a day and worship once a week, but a God that knows every detail of our lives and wants to hold our hand through it all. If our time in the secret place looks like this, we will come out just like the butterfly eclosing from its chrysalis. We will be transformed.
