Breaking a Horse, Part 1

Tuesday, June 10th, 2025

A few weeks ago God kept giving me the phrase, “breaking a horse.” Every time I would ask Him what was going on or why things had felt so difficult He kept saying, “You are going through a process like breaking a horse.” I’ll explain a little so you don’t ask a question like my kids did, “So that’s like breaking a horse in half?” No, that’s not it. Horses are wild animals by nature. They want to be free and go where they please. The only things that used to get on their back were predators trying to kill them. Needless to say, they are not too fond of trusting a human or having them ride on their back.

Sometime after God gave me this phrase, my husband and I sat down one evening for a rare 15 minutes of TV watching. We came across a PBS Nature show called Equus “The Story of the Horse”. The end of the show that we caught was all about this man, Jimmy Anderson, who is sought after for his ability to break horses. God had my attention for sure. In this segment, Jimmy said so many incredible things that although they were spoken entirely in the natural realm have additional significance in the spiritual realm. So, for the next few blogs I am going to pull out some of those things and talk more about them. I feel like a broken record, but more and more I keep sharing how so much in the natural is a reflection of what happens in the spiritual. God doesn’t do things on accident. Everywhere we look we can learn more about Him and who we are in Him. It’s His omnipresent nature.

When Jimmy had just started getting the horse used to being in a corral and being close to a human, he said, “When that horse can start to give me [it’s] two eyes, he also gives me his focus.” That sounds so basic, but isn’t that exactly what God says to us?

Anna, I know you have one eye on the cares of this world and one eye on Me. I am patiently waiting for that exact moment when you fully focus both eyes on Me. When I only have half of your attention, I only get half of you. I don’t do things half-way; there is no luke-warmness in My Kingdom. I know life hasn’t been easy and you have done what you could to stay the course, but when will You trust Me enough to give me your full attention? Pennies in My Kingdom are worth more than all the world’s gold. My bank account is yours; My power is yours; My love is yours; My strength is yours; My fortress is yours; My goodness is yours. Nothing in this world compares. It never has and it never will.

Final Thoughts…

The Bible is jam-packed with scriptures reminding us to keep our eyes and our focus on all things God. Seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). Fix your eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2). Set your mind on things that are above (Colossians 3:2). It’s an all or nothing. If we try to keep part of our focus on the cares, trinkets or distractions of this world we will never experience all that God has for us. God is a jealous God (Exodus 34:14), and it’s all for our benefit. Lord, show us all the places where both of our eyes are not on You. We long for You. We know You have all we need and more. Father, lead us to a place of two eyes towards You.
