Him and Not Me

Sometimes when we go through challenging seasons our primary thoughts and emotions gravitate towards self-pity and resentment. Why are we here, how did we get here, and what do we need to do to get out? We focus way too much on ourselves forgetting that God knows what is best and He will use it all for our good and His glory.

We have this false idea that the Christian life is problem-free or that we somehow live life mildly elevated above this imperfect world. Instead of giving us a premature way out what if God is using our trial like a worm on a hook to see how many ripe and ready fish He can catch? How many people all across this earth are going through similar trials as ours? How many people are desperate for a way out that have never met the Way Maker?

Let’s look at Hebrews 2:17:

17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

If we go through life never having knocked at death’s door, never questioning our identity, never battling with addiction and never crawling through the darkest valleys how will we provide support to those that have? Would we rather live an easy life and never pull a muddy hand out of the muck and mire or would we rather trudge through death-dark valleys, cold and lonely paths and turbulent storms with a tug rope of vagabonds, rebels and outcasts on our way to the golden gate?

Final Thoughts…

Our goal in this life is to be more and more like Jesus. If He endured the cruelest and most difficult places on earth to show us the way to our Heavenly Father, doesn’t it seem we should be willing to do the same? Time and time again God keeps showing me that this life really isn’t about me. Yes, He loves me and He has wonderful things in store for me, but at the end of the day it’s about Him. How many people can He pour out His love on? How many hearts can overflow with His goodness? How many people can fulfill the heavenly books written about them? Am I doing my part as the body and Bride of Christ so that we can bring a flood of people through the heavenly gates?
