Today is another lesson from the PBS Nature Show Equus The Story of the Horse with Jimmy Anderson. On two different occasions in the breaking process Jimmy mentioned that having another trained horse in the process helps to give confidence to the one being trained. Jimmy’s horse became a mentor of sorts to reassure the new colt that everything would be alright.
The second mention of a horse mentor was when he got to the point of putting the saddle on the new colt. Jimmy actually brought his trained horse over right next to the colt. The colt, who was probably a little weary from the events of the day, rested his head on this other horse’s back while the saddle was being draped over him. It was this incredible picture of what happens when we trust God and when we have brothers in sisters in Christ that can be trusted to encourage us in our walk with God.
I cannot stress enough the importance of a strong community of like-minded believers. I’m talking about people that you can open up to, pray with and cry out to when you need help. We need a good mix of people that have survived the fire and those that are still tiptoeing on burning coals. Sometimes some of the best encouragement we can get is knowing that we are not the only ones in a battle for our lives. And I’ve also experienced that being able to encourage and pray with others who are struggling has an amazing ability to shrink the size of whatever our troubles are. It gives us purpose and encourages us to press on so that God can use us to touch even more people. Sometimes just taking our eyes off of ourselves for a minute does wonders.
Final Thoughts…
The enemy wants to keep us secluded. He tries to tell us we are either better than everyone else, or so much worse off than others that if they knew the truth of who we are they would never talk to us again. The real body of Christ wouldn’t do that. They don’t care your background, your struggles, your doubts or your fears. They just want to help shine light wherever it’s dark so that the enemy cannot stay. Like the trained horse in the corral, they are not shaken by your nerves or your stubbornness. They know the grass is so much greener on God’s side and they want to show you the love and grace that brought them there.
